Routing the Grounding Cable Through the Roof — Standards and Practice
Grounding a photovoltaic system is not an optional extra, but a safety requirement. The grounding cable (PE — Protective Earth) must be routed from the module array on the roof to the equipotential bonding in the building. But how does this cable get through the roof cleanly and in accordance with standards?
Why Grounding is So Important
Equipotential bonding protects against lightning strikes and insulation faults. Without proper grounding, the following risks arise:
- Dangerous contact voltages on metallic parts
- Damage to inverters and other components
- Increased fire risk in case of insulation faults
- Problems with acceptance by the electrician
Normative Requirements
The grounding of PV systems is regulated by, among others, DIN VDE 0100-712 and DIN EN 62305 (lightning protection). Key requirements are:
- All metallic parts of the PV system must be included in the equipotential bonding
- The grounding conductor must be protected and permanently installed
- The cable routing must not impair the roof's watertightness
- The cross-section of the PE cable must comply with standard requirements
The Problem: Separate Routing for the Grounding Cable
In practice, the grounding cable is often routed separately through the roof — through an additional drill hole, a ventilation tile, or along the verge. This creates additional weak points and means more effort during installation.
