Solar Cable Bending Radius: Why it Matters During Installation
Every solar cable has a minimum bending radius. If this is exceeded, insulation damage, increased resistance, and in the worst case, fire hazards can occur. The point where the cable passes through the roof is particularly critical.
What is the Bending Radius?
The bending radius describes the minimum radius at which a cable can be bent without losing its electrical or mechanical properties. For common PV cables with 4 mm or 6 mm cross-sections, the minimum bending radius is typically four to six times the outer diameter.
Critical Point: The Roof Penetration
At the roof penetration, cables change direction, often by 90 degrees or more. If the penetration is too narrow or poorly designed, the cables will be bent too sharply at this point. The consequences:
- Microcracks in the insulation
- Increased electrical resistance
- Heat generation at the bend point
- Premature cable aging
