PV Cables on Tile Roofs: What Really Matters for the Penetration
The point where the solar cable passes from the roof into the interior of the house is where most subsequent complaints arise. Two things are crucial – and it's worth separating them clearly.
1. Watertightness comes from the roofing – not from a single component
A tiled roof is a constructively ventilated, overlapping system. Rain security is achieved through proper roofing and – where necessary – the underlayment. Anyone who tries to "seal" a single penetration with silicone is more likely to create long-term problems. The cable routing is neatly integrated into the tile level, not sealed.
2. The real risk for the cable: abrasion on the tile edge
If the solar cable lies unprotected on the sharp tile edge, the insulation will chafe through over the years – leading to wire breakage, short circuit and fire hazards, and ultimately an expensive complaint. Dos for Solar Installers
- Insert cables through the side slots – pre-assembled connectors remain attached.
- Lightly grind the tile at the support edge, hang in the penetration, replace the tile.
- Select size according to tile type and cable cross-section (105/125/150 mm; 2-/4-fold, with/without grounding).
- Ensure rain security via the roofing/underlayment.
Don'ts
- Do not run cables unprotected over the tile edge (risk of abrasion).
- Do not misunderstand the penetration as a "seal" – it is abrasion protection, not a sealing element.
- Do not unnecessarily disassemble MC4 connectors.
