Running grounding cables and PV cables together through the roof – how electrical companies solve this problem cleanly

Why the grounding cable feed-through is often underestimated

When planning a PV installation, the focus is often on the DC cables. The grounding cable—typically 4 mm² or 6 mm² copper conductor—on the other hand, is often only identified as a bottleneck on the roof. If both cable types are routed through a common opening in the roof tile, problems arise: the opening is too small, the tile is damaged, or the cables rub against the sharp tile edge.

Requirements for a professional cable feed-through

The feed-through aid must offer sufficient space for both PV cables (approx. 7.5 mm outer diameter) and grounding cables (up to 16 mm) at the same time. The cables must not rest on sharp edges at the feed-through point—otherwise, vibration and thermal expansion will lead to abrasion damage over the years.

The NEXCAPE® roof feed-through: designed for both cable types

The NEXCAPE® PV cable roof feed-through made of UV-resistant TPU offers space for PV cables up to approx. 7.5 mm and grounding cables up to 16 mm simultaneously. The soft, abrasion-resistant TPU material acts as a protective sleeve for both cables—it prevents direct contact with the tile edge and dampens relative movements.

Installation in three steps

Step 1: Check the roof tile at the feed-through point. For many tile types, no grinding is necessary.

Step 2: Route PV cables and grounding cables through the NEXCAPE® roof feed-through—even with pre-assembled MC4 connectors.

Step 3: Hook the roof feed-through into the tile. Sits stably, no additional fastening required.

Three lengths for different tile thicknesses

The NEXCAPE® roof feed-through is available in three lengths: 105 mm, 125 mm, and 150 mm—the right version for every tile type. For companies that serve various roof types, it is recommended to stock all three lengths.
