Retrofitting roof penetrations: Optimising existing PV systems

Why a Retrofit Often Makes Sense

Many PV systems installed five or ten years ago have a problem: The cable penetration through the roof was solved provisionally. Silicone on a hole in the tile, a drilled-out ventilation tile, or loosely laid cables without proper sealing – such solutions don't last forever. For solar installers, retrofitting existing systems offers a growing business field.

Typical Weaknesses in Older Systems

  • Silicone Seals: Become brittle and cracked after a few years of UV exposure
  • Drilled Tiles: Weaken the statics and do not provide reliable sealing
  • Universal Penetrations Without PV Suitability: Too large openings, insufficient cable clamping
  • Lack of Strain Relief: Cables move in the wind and chafe against edges

Retrofit Step-by-Step

1. Inventory

First, the existing penetration is inspected: What type of penetration is installed? How many cables need to pass through the roof? Are there already visible moisture damages?

2. Selecting the Right Penetration

The number of PV cables and any existing grounding cable determine the variant. NEXCAPE offers penetrations for 2, 4, or 6 PV cables, each also with an additional PE penetration. The penetration length (105, 125, or 150 mm) depends on the roof structure.

3. Removing the Old Solution

Lift tiles, remove old sealing, and clean the penetration area. For drilled tiles, it is recommended to replace the damaged tile with a new one.

4. Installing the New Penetration

NEXCAPE roof penetrations are installed without tools. The PV cables are simply pushed through the TPU penetration with the MC4 connectors – no need to remove the connectors. The flexible TPU material from 3D printing conforms to the tile profile.

5. Functional Check

After installation, check: Are the cables firmly seated? Does the penetration lie flat on the tile? Is the overlap with the adjacent tiles correct?

Economic Potential for Solar Installers

Retrofitting roof penetrations is a quick intervention with high customer value. Many system operators are unaware of the weaknesses on their roof. Solar installers who actively address this issue during maintenance appointments generate additional orders with minimal material costs. For B2B orders of 20 pieces or more, NEXCAPE offers attractive volume discounts.
