Winter poses extreme demands on roof penetrations. Snow load, ice formation, and freeze-thaw cycles quickly take their toll on inferior materials. Those who install in summer must think of winter.
Winter Loads on Roof Penetrations
- Snow Load: During heavy snowfall, several hundred kilograms per square meter can weigh on the roof. The penetration must withstand this pressure.
- Ice Formation: Meltwater can freeze on the penetration and mechanically stress the material.
- Freeze-Thaw Cycles: Repeated freezing and thawing can crack rigid materials.
- Ice Slide: Sliding snow masses can displace poorly secured penetrations.
Why TPU Is Impervious to Winter
NEXCAPE roof penetrations are made of TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane). This material retains its elasticity even at temperatures far below freezing. While rigid plastics can become brittle and break in the cold, TPU remains flexible and continues to seal reliably.
Installation Notes for the Cold Season
Even the best penetration only works with correct installation. In winter, please note:
- Clear roof tiles of snow and ice before installation
- Insert the penetration dry, no standing water in the mounting opening
- Lay cable loops so that meltwater can drain off
- Choose a position below snow guard systems, if possible
Ice-Free Cable Routing
